State University System of Florida

August 7th, 2008

Before speaking about the universities of Florida, I think it is reasonable to speak about State University System of Florida first. In state, it is abbreviated as SUS, out of the state it is abbreviated as SUSF. SUS is a system of Universities, governed by Florida Board of Governors. Before 1905, the system was under the govern of Board of Education, if speaking about 1838 and taking into account the constitution adopted in 1838, the U.S Congress was that one to control the education in Florida.

During 1905-1965, Florida Board of Control has under its consideration only few universities. In 1965, Florida Board of Regents was the responsible institution for the education in Florida. However, it was disbanded on 2001, and since that time two powers to control the process of education were established - Florida Board of Education and (it was controlling the public education at all the levels), and Board of Trustees (it was governing separately to each institution).

In 2002, Florida was under the government of U.S. Senator Bob Graham, who has established a new body of governing the education - Florida Board of Governors.

That is a history of the development of the State University System of Florida.
