University of Florida
The University of Florida is a major, comprehensive, public, land-grant, and research university. The largest, state’s oldest, and most exhaustive university, it is amongst the nation’s most diverse public universities. The University of Florida has a long and eventful history of prescribed programs in international research, education, and service. It is considered one of only seventeen public, land-grant universities belonging to the Association of U.S. Universities.
In year 1853, the East Florida Seminary took over the Ocala’s Kingsbury Academy. It moved to Gainesville in 60s and later was united with the state’s Florida Agricultural College in Lake City. In year 1905, by legislative action,it became a university and later was moved to Gainesville. At the beginning, classes met with 102 students on September 26, 1906. The university officially was opened to women in year 1947. With about 51,000 students, today it is one of the 5 biggest universities in the country.
The University of Florida has a 2,000-acre campus plus roughly 900 buildings (comprising 170 with laboratories and classrooms). The northeast side of campus is recorded as a Historic District on the Historic Places’ National Register. The university’s residence halls have a capacity of about 7,000 students as well as the 5 family housing villages settle approximately 2,200 graduate and married students.
The university’s extensive capital program has caused facilities ideal for the new century research comprising the McKnight Brain Institute, Health Professions, Pharmacy & Nursing Building, Genetics & Cancer Research Center, and Proton-beam Therapy Center. UF’s present facilities have a book value of about $1 billion plus a replacement value of roughly $2 billion.
